Monroe County Clerk Jamie Romeo is running for re-election.
This hour, we sit down with her to discuss her work, her priorities for office, and the role of the county clerk. It's an opportunity for voters to hear her answers to our questions and yours.
In studio:
- Jamie Romeo, candidate for Monroe County Clerk
Key issues raised by candidate during "Connections" appearance:
- Romeo said the County Clerk’s Office is a “very complex job” that oversees several functions of federal and state government. With that, she acknowledged that sometimes, “all we can do is advocate” for positive changes.
- She said they do have control over the physical environment and staff, including the training that those employees receive and the resources at their disposal. As an example, she noted improvements and new technology at some DMV offices.
- Romeo said if she could, she’d like to change the “point system” used to get a state-issued identification card. She said the current system makes it extremely difficult for someone experiencing homelessness or incarceration to get that ID. While she can’t change that, she said her office has worked with nonprofit and service organizations to help vulnerable communities navigate the process. She also said she would “continue to expand this conversation” with state officials if re-elected.
- She also spoke about her call to elected state officials to pass a bill to address racially restrictive covenants on New York homeowners’ deeds. She said this would “create a process where homeowners would have a no-fee way of repudiating that language off of their property.”
