Greece organization needs food donations
A nonprofit agency that provides food for people in Greece and Charlotte is in need of donations, as demand picks up during the coronavirus pandemic.
Chairperson for the Greece Ecumenical Food Shelf, Amy Peritsky, said that for several weeks they were not accepting donations because they didn't want to expose their volunteers to the virus.
Now she says they've learned they can quarantine the food for several days before unpacking it and make it available to a growing number of families each month.
``We've been getting many more requests from people, many of whom have never called the food shelf before. Some days it's well over half of are callers are new people asking for food," Peritsky said.
Peritsky said they normally serve 150 to 175 households, but last month it was 275.
She said the food shelf is in need of all the basics that can be used to make a simple meal.
Peritsky said people can call 585-683-9674 for more details.
The food shelf is planning to hold a drive-through food drive at its 500 Maiden Lane location in Greece.
