Governor Cuomo says that his request to President Obama for a federal disaster declaration for several counties following the flooding in May has been approved.

That designation includes Livingston, Ontario, Steuben and Yates Counties.  The storms and flooding which began on May 12 affected a large portion of the state, particularly 11 counties where heavy rains fell at the rate of 5 to 7 inches in less than three hours.

Parts of Yates County including Penn Yan and Branchport were particularly hard it.

The state and various counties spent more than $28 million in their response to the storms. The President's action makes federal funding available to state and local governments and some non-profit organizations.
