There’s a big renovation project on the way for Frontier Field, The announcement was made Thursday by Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo, and Rochester Red Wings President Naomi Silver.

They announced that a new, natural turf field will be installed, noting that there is a point during the life of a natural grass field in which it must be replaced.

Construction on the $2.2 million project will begin next week. The three layers of the field will be replaced over a 12-week period, and final maintenance will be completed next March in advance of the Red Wings opening day in April.  Along with the sod, the drainage and irrigation system will be repaired and replaced.

The field was last replaced in 2007.

Last year Dinolfo and Silver signed a new long term lease between the county and Rochester Community Baseball. Under terms of the agreement, the county will continue to make capital improvements to Frontier Field in accordance with International League and Major League baseball standards.
