A jury in Syracuse has found former Rochester City Court Judge Leticia Astacio not guilty of a charge that she illegally tried to buy a gun. She had faced a charge of attempted criminal purchase or disposal of a weapon.
Astacio was removed from the bench as a City Court judge last October in connection with issues that arose from her 2016 misdemeanor conviction on a drunken driving charge.
Astacio was accused of trying to buy a shotgun at Dick’s Sporting Goods in Henrietta in April 2018. Authorities said that her probation prohibited her from trying to buy a gun.
She was found not guilty on Friday, a day after the jury had begun deliberations. The trial was moved to Syracuse because of all of the media coverage in Monroe County.
Astacio has indicated that she is running for Rochester City Council in the Northwest District this year.
LaShana Boose is the candidate backed by the Monroe County Democratic Committee, and other candidates for that seat include Jose Peo and Lydia Rivera-Warr.
