Gates Police Officer hospitalized after driving himself to the ER

A Gates Police Officer is in the hospital after officials say he drove himself to Strong Memorial Hospital Tuesday night, suffering from a heart attack.

According to Chief Jim VanBrederode, Officer Lance Duffy, who is also the department’s public information officer, had just refereed a hockey game and was feeling ill. He was off duty.

The chief says Duffy parked at the front door to the emergency department when his heart stopped. Staffers had to smash his car window to pull him out; they started CPR and had to shock his heart, stabilized him, and sent him into surgery.

Duffy’s prognosis is unknown at this point, but VanBrederode says doctors are optimistic since they started CPR immediately.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
