policeunitytour37.com

A dozen local police officers traveled from Rochester to New Jersey on Sunday morning.

It is part of annual Police Unity Tour which travels from Whippany, New Jersey to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C.

The tour is a nearly 400 mile bicycle ride to honor police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

Local officers are riding in memory of Officer Daryl Pierson and Lieutenant Michael Chiapperini as well as other officers who gave their lives in the line of duty.

During 2015, 123 officers who died in the line of duty while serving their communities will be honored with their names added to a memorial wall.

At  the local event at Edmund Lyons Park in East Rochester, a memorial bicycle dedicated to fallen RPD officers was unveiled. The bicycle was designed and painted by Officer Matthew Balch of the Rochester Police Department.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
