A longtime staffer and executive at the Democrat and Chronicle has died. The newspaper reportsthat Tom Flynn died of heart failure Sunday at the age of 77.
Flynn, a Rochester native, joined the parent company, Gannett in 1957 as a copy boy and librarian. He rose up through the ranks as a reporter, then assistant managing editor and columnist. He later became the Vice President of Communications for the Democrat and Chronicle and retired in 2005.
The newspaper's president and publisher Michael Kane called Flynn "the heart and soul" of the D & C, and it's former companion paper, the Times-Union for 50 years. Former publisher Dave Hunke said of Flynn that " Second only to his family was his love of the Rochester community."
Tom Flynn's funeral will be Wednesday, 10 a.m. at the Church of the Assumption in Fairport.
