(WXXI News & AP) The frigid temperatures and strong winds continue to make travel difficult around the region on Sunday.
On Saturday and during the overnight several inches of snow fell in some places, and even in places where there wasn't as much snow, the winds having been swirling the snow around making for extremely difficult travel conditions. The Ontario County Sheriff's Dept. issued a travel advisory until 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
It's a similar story for many roads. The NYS Thruway is open, but blowing snow can cause visibility issues at times, and some roads around the area, especially in open, rural stretches of highway, can experience near whiteout conditions at times.
A winter storm warning continues for many counties in and around the Rochester area until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday. The forecast is for another couple of inches of snow on Sunday, with a temperature not expected to get much above minus-2. With northwest winds of more than 20 miles an hour, the wind chill could be 30 below zero at times.
Several flights have been canceled or delayed at the Greater Rochester International Airport.
Some area churches canceled services on Sunday due to the weather.
The bitterly cold temperatures have forced Rochester shelters to take action. The Open Door Mission implemented its “Cold Blue" Plan. That means the facility will be open 24 hours a day.
Wintry conditions have been battering other parts of the Northeast. The governors of Rhode Island and Massachusetts aren't declaring outright travel bans but they're doing everything else they can to keep people off the roads today and out of the fourth blizzard in a month.
Snow and dangerously high winds are hitting the region on top of more than 6 feet of snow in some areas. A blizzard warning is in effect for coastal areas from Connecticut to Maine.
Several inches of snow also fell in parts of the New York City area, with winds also causing blowing snow and visibility problems.
