Latest Monroe County COVID-19 cases: number of hospitalizations hit a new high

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Monroe County health officials on Sunday released the latest numbers on COVID-19 cases.

There were 25 new confirmed cases of the virus since the figures released on Saturday. The ages of those infected range from individuals between 10 and 19 years old to women in their 90s.

They included one new death, bringing the total to 219.  Of the 2,877 confirmed cases, 195 people are hospitalized. That is the highest number of people hospitalized for the virus so far.

Previously, Monroe County Commissioner of Public Health, Dr. Michael Mendoza, has said thatrising hospitalization numberswere primarily the result of increased testing of people already in hospitals for non-COVID-19 treatments and a state rule mandating longer hospital stays for some nursing home residents with COVID-19.

19 of the 195 patients are in the ICU on a ventilator. That number has stayed relatively stable in recent weeks.

There have been 1,991 total recovered from isolation to date. This number reflects confirmed positive COVID-19 cases and known presumed positive COVID-19 cases. The county has more information at dashboard.monroecounty.gov.
