There are reports in the financial press that Gannett, which owns the Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester and dozens of other newspapers around the country including USA Today, has had merger talks with Gatehouse Media.
Gatehouse is a Pittsford-based company that publishes more than 150 daily newspapers and hundreds of other publications.
The Wall Street Journal says that Gannett recently discussed the possibility of a merger with Gatehouse.
In January, Gannett rejected a hostile takeover offer from MNG Enterprises.
