Tops Expands In Wayne County

Tops Markets is expanding its presence in Wayne County.  The company on Tuesday opened two stores; one involves a new building in Walworth, the other is using an existing building that used to be a Big 'M’ supermarket in Lyons.

Tops CEO Frank Curci says before these store openings, the supermarket chain had just one store in Wayne County in the Town of Ontario. He says that area has good growth potential for Tops.

"This is a great opportunity for us, these are bedroom communities to an extent for the city of Rochester, the people know us here; they’re good growing communities."

Curci says these are smaller stores compared to some of the larger supermarkets that are popular in larger communities, and he says they are a good fit for those locations in Wayne County.

"Our stores are not as big as some, this is a 42,000 square foot store, so they're the right size for the opportunity here and we think we could continue to grow with the town as things go along."

The store in Lyons employs 75 people and the one in Walworth has 90 workers. Curci says like a lot of the stores Tops is opening now, both of these new stores also have gas stations.

Tops now has 164 stores in Upstate New York, Pennsylvania and Vermont.
