Vacant buildings can still be… vibrant?

Three smiling people sit in front of microphones in a radio talk studio: a woman at left has long dark hair and is wearing a black and white patterned, short-sleeve shirt; a man at center has short blonde hair and is wearing glasses and a black short-sleeved polo shirt; a man at right has short dark hair and is wearing glasses, a white button-down shirt and jeans.

There’s been a lot of talk in Rochester lately about vacancy – vacant houses, vacant buildings, vacant spaces that were once thriving. An upcoming symposium will offer ideas on how to fill those spaces – and not just with the first person or company to make an offer.

What cities do with vacant spaces will be critical to their next generation. The city of Rochester has at least one example of a thriving neighborhood, anchored by the Strong National Museum of Play.

So how can more spaces follow? We explore it with our guests:

Evan Dawson is the host of "Connections with Evan Dawson." He joined WXXI in January 2014 after working at 13WHAM-TV, where he served as morning news anchor. He was hired as a reporter for 13WHAM-TV in 2003 before being promoted to anchor in 2007.
Megan Mack is the executive producer of "Connections with Evan Dawson" and live/televised engagement programming.
Julie Williams is an associate producer for "Connections with Evan Dawson" and is also the office administrator for radio, news and technology and operations. She started at WXXI in 2019 and has been working on Connections since 2022.
