The University of Rochester has become the latest, and one of the largest area universities to cancel commencement activities.

In a letter to the campus community, UR President Sarah Manglesdorf said that she “talked with our deans, our doctors, and our epidemiologists. Not a single one has been able to tell me definitively what things will be like in May. Given that uncertainty, and given the predictions that the effects of this pandemic may linger for months, I have made the decision to cancel the University’s on-campus commencement celebrations this May.”

Manglesdorf says that UR is now looking into alternate ways to celebrate commencement this year. She said that the university is looking into alternate ways to celebrate commencement this year, and said she is reviewing a number of options for a “virtual” University-wide event.

Other universities and colleges that have canceled or postponed commencement include RIT, Nazareth College and the College at Brockport.
