Monroe County Council of School Superintendents president Thomas Putnam said Friday that the county’s suburban schools will remain open for now, despite coronavirus concerns.

Putnam, who is also superintendent of the Penfield school district, said the decision was unanimous among the county’s districts. He said any potential decision to close schools would come after consultations with the Monroe County Health Department.

“This area we are in now is really unprecedented," said Putnam. "In terms of long term closure or the potential of long term closure. Every district is going to find a way to support instruction when schools or if schools close.”

Since there is only one known case of coronavirus in Monroe County as of Friday, Putnam said precautionary measures like hand-washing and deep-cleaning buses and schools will suffice for now.

But he also said parents should keep their contact information current with districts and arrange for child care as early as Monday should things change.

Greece School District Superintendent Kathleen Groupman, who is vice president of that group, says she expects school meals to continue for kids in suburban schools.

“While some districts are needier, every district is working on a plan to provide breakfast and lunch to everyone who needs it,” saud Groupman

Rochester City School District Superintendent Terry Dade said in a letter this week that they're taking similar measures.

Uncommons Schools which operates Rochester Prep's six K-12 charter schools has informed parents that they are closing until March 30th.  Vertus Charter School may close next week and reevaluate going forward.
