Remembering Eddie Money and his recent Rochester show

WXXI-TV/Need to Know

Singer-songwriter Eddie Money has died after a battle with cancer at the age of 70. He died Friday in Los Angeles.

Money, who was one of the top selling rock stars of the 70s and 80s, was in Rochester early last year.

That’s because this was the location for the world premiere of his autobiographical show, “Two Tickets to Paradise: The Musical.”

Money’s aunt and uncle also lived in Rochester for a time. When he came to the city in early 2018 he was also a guest on WXXI’s talk show, Connections with Evan Dawson, and talked about having to work hard to be a musical success.

“My father was a cop, my mother worked in a bank, and they didn’t have any money, we had 5 kids, so I didn’t really have enough money to buy a set of drums, or be a guitar player; my parents were going to buy me a guitar amp and a guitar. When I started out, I had to be great because I had to be the lead singer and I had to use somebody else’s microphone because I couldn’t’ afford one,” Money said.

Money also talked a lot about his earlier substance abuse, and the fact he had been clean for several years when he visited Rochester in 2018.

“Now that I’m sober, I appreciate the fact that these fans appreciate me, and the thing is, where would you be without your fans, that’s like, where would I be without my wife and my kids too, you know,” Money said on Connections.
