The Lake Ontario St. Lawrence River Alliance has been rallying against lake level management Plan 2014, saying it is responsible for flooding and property damage along the south shore.
In a press release, the Alliance announced they are taking several steps toward legal action against the International Joint Commission, the group responsible for overseeing Great Lakes management.
Specifically, they’re asking President Trump to revoke an executive order that exempts the IJC from lawsuits.
They’re also asking for an immediate repeal of Plan 2014, replacement of board members, and compensation for damages.
Under the International Organizations Immunities Act of 1945, the IJC and other international groups are exempt from lawsuits related to their work.
Spokespeople for the IJC have maintained that this year’s flooding has been caused by high precipitation and inflows from the upper Great Lakes. Experts have backed up those claims.
Still, members of the IJC and its Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Board have agreed to review Plan 2014.
