Brett Dahlberg / WXXI News

First hour: How counselors are helping inmates transition back into the community

Second hour: Environmental activist and scientist Sandra Steingraber on environmental stewardship in New York State

A local woman recently told WXXI News that jail saved her life. She participated in a program through the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office where counselors help inmates struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, who would benefit from vocational training, and more. Counselors say the program is particularly important for unsentenced women. We’ll hear from the woman who said the program saved her life. She'll be joined by her counselors to discuss the program’s impact. This conversation is based on reporting from WXXI’s Brett Dahlberg. In studio:

  • Brett Dahlberg, WXXI health reporter and producer
  • Sam Luzius, Rochester resident who benefited from the counseling programs at the Monroe County Correctional Facility
  • Tisha Smith, director of inmate drug and alcohol treatment programs in the Jail Bureau at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office
  • Frankie Sampson, drug and alcohol counselor in the Jail Bureau at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office

Then in our second hour, we continue our series of conversations about statewide efforts to curb climate change. We’ll be joined by Sandra Steingraber, a scientist, climate activist and scholar at Ithaca College, who recently took her cause and research to Albany. She’ll be in Rochester this weekend for a program about environmental stewardship with Interfaith Impact of New York State, but first, she joins us on Connections. Our guests:

  • Sandra Steingraber, environmental activist, biologist, and distinguished scholar in residence in the Department of Environmental Studies at Ithaca College
  • Rev. Richard Gilbert, minister emeritus of First Unitarian Church of Rochester, and president of Interfaith Impact of New York State
  • Rev. David Inglis, retired United Church of Christ pastor
