A well-known philanthropist in Rochester has died. Peggy Wegman, who was married to the late Bob Wegman, died this week at the age of 91.
Peggy Wegman was the mother of 8 children including former State Senator and current Acting State Supreme Court Justice Rick Dollinger.
He says his mother was involved with a number of charitable activities, particularly education.
“She worked with the Wegmans grant to the schools, to the Catholic schools, she was very involved in that… she was involved in philanthropy at St. John Fisher and she and Bob really made a significant contribution to this community,” Dollinger said.
Dollinger said his mother believed strongly that early childhood education, and education in grammar school was critically important to a child’s future.
Peggy Wegman married Bob Wegman in 1977. He died in 2006. She remained close with the Wegman family and Danny Wegman, the current Chairman of the supermarket chain, issued this statement:
“Our family is deeply saddened by the passing of Peggy Wegman. We are grateful to have known her and loved her, and especially grateful for the many ways that Peggy and my dad made a difference in the lives of so many families in our community.”
Calling hours at the Anthony Funeral Chapel at 2305 Monroe Avenue in Brighton will be held Friday, September 6 from 3-7pm.
A celebration of her life and funeral mass will be held Saturday, September 7, 10am at Blessed Sacrament Church at 534 Oxford St. in Rochester.
