Imagine you’ve just spotted a TV stand on Facebook Marketplace that is exactly what you’re looking for, and affordable!
Now all you have to do to secure your item is ... meet a total stranger from the internet.
"We certainly have heard from many people who have said they’ve been in a scenario like this," said town Supervisor Dave Seeley. "They were either left uncomfortable or it did not have a positive outcome."
Seeley, state Sen. Rich Funke, and the police department have developed a solution to this problem. It’s called an eCommerce Exchange Safety Zone, and it’s adjacent to the town’s Public Safety Building.
It's a safe place where people can meet when buying or selling things online.
"This provides security, it provides proximity to the police department and 24/7 surveillance," Seeley said.
The safety zone was made possible with a grant from New York state. Seeley said they want to be adaptive to the online economy.
