A Rochester man acquitted in the 2015 Genesee St. shooting near the Boys & Girls Clubs was shot and killed over the weekend.
Police say that 24 year old Jalen Everett was shot in a car on the northwest side of the city on Saturday night. Officers who were in the area on an unrelated investigation reported hearing gunshots around 8pm near Dewey Avenue, and they found Everett shot in a vehicle at Dewey and Electric Avenues.
He was later pronounced dead at the hospital. There is no word yet of any arrests, and that section of the city was shut down for the investigation for several hours.
Everett had been accused of being one of three people in the car that drove past the Boys & Girls Clubs on Genesee St. in August 2015, when a crowd of people were hit by gunfire.
Three men died, Jonah Barley, Johnny Johnson and Raekwon Manigault and four others were injured.
Everett was originally convicted of second degree murder, but that verdict was set aside after allegations of juror misconduct. He then was acquitted at his retrial in January 2017.
Another man accusing in those killings, Michael Mathis Jr. was also acquitted. Johnny Blackshell was convicted in the shootings on Genesee St. and was sentenced to life without parole.
On Sunday, speaking to reporters, RPD Chief La’Ron Singletary warned against anyone who might get involved in some kind of retaliation for Everett’s death. He said the community should let the police department “focus on the task at hand,” so that they can find whomever is responsible for the crime.
Singletary also praised people in the community for offering to help to make sure there isn’t a spate of retaliatory violence.
