Crews continue to work to clear the scene after a train derailment in the Town of Attica on Thursday afternoon.
The train’s two crew members, an engineer and conductor, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, and were transported to a local hospital.
A spokesman for Norfolk Southern tells WXXI News at about 4:15 p.m., an eastbound train transporting cars derailed.
The train was en route from Buffalo to Mechanicville, N.Y. (in Saratoga County), and it consisted of two locomotives and 43 rail cars loaded with automobiles. The spokesman says there was no hazardous material being transported.
Spokesman Jonathan Glass says that both of the engines derailed as did an unknown number of rail cars, and Norfolk Southern is worked with first responders to secure the scene.
Some diesel fuel spilled from at least one of the locomotives and Norfolk Southern has environmental specialists going to the area to help clean up the spill.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
