Flu cases increase in latest Monroe County numbers

URMC CENTER FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH AND PREVENTION

The number of flu cases confirmed in Monroe County have risen.

The latest on the weekly figures have been released by the county health department.

The number of deaths in Monroe County so far this season rose by one to 11, in the latest figures which are as of March 16

And the number of laboratory confirmed cases of the flu so far this season  jumped more than 600 from the previous week, to nearly 4,000.

Those numbers are still not as severe as last year at this time, when there were 14 flu deaths in Monroe County, and more than 5,900 confirmed cases.

Nationally, the flu season may not be showing the kinds of numbers we saw last year, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did note recently that the hospitalization rate due to influenza-like symptoms remains elevated, and that  this year’s flu season is likely to be relatively long.

The flu season usually runs through April, and the CDC continues to recommend vaccinations as long as the flu viruses are still around and circulating.
