Algae Blooms Persist On Conesus Lake

The Livingston County Health Department has issued an update on the blue-green algae blooms recently discovered on Conesus Lake.

Officials say the blooms continue to be found throughout the lake, primarily at the northern end of the lake. That could have some impact on recreational activities for the upcoming Labor Day weekend.

The health department warns that contact with the algae may result in health effects including itching and rashes and if you are in Conesus Lake in areas where the blooms are visible, avoid direct contact with water in that area.

Blooms occur when algae multiply very rapidly over a short period of time, usually in calm, warm water.

Officials say that the public water supply in that area is safe for drinking. Conesus does supply drinking water to the villages of Avon and Geneseo, and officials say they are doing additional testing to make sure the water to those communities is safe.
