Solar panels now operational for a Town of Irondequoit building; more to follow

Town of Irondequoit

The town of Irondequoit is now online with new solar panels for one of the town buildings.

That according to Supervisor Dave Seeley, who announced completion of Phase One of the project, which involved putting up 180 panels on a key town building.

“…atop our public safety building, which houses our police and courts. That was just completed last week and came on line today, (Thursday) so we’re very excited about that. The next component of that project will be an even larger of solar panels that will be put atop our department of public works facility which is being constructed right now," Seeley told WXXI News.

Irondequoit received a $250,000 state grant to put up the solar panels at the Public Safety Building and the new Public Works building, which is still under construction.

Seeley says the solar project will save the town tens of thousands of dollars every year on the town’s energy bill

And Seeley hopes Irondequoit can eventually put solar panels on other buildings as well.

“We’ll continue to do that, I think there’s a lot of opportunities being provided by the state and other initiatives that allow us to move forward on these clean, renewable energy projects, and be better stewards of the environment. But in this case, that also translates into savings for tax dollars.”

Irondeqouit, Brighton, and the Town and Village of Pittsford are also involved in an effort to be able to provide 100-percent renewable electricity to their residents.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
