Even with a high temperature predicted in the mid-70s Tuesday, it will still be a good day to think about skiing. At least that’s what officials at Bristol Mountain are hoping.

With one of the colder April’s on record, you might think everyone can’t wait for real spring weather to get here.  That might be true, up to an extent, but there are diehard skiers who think this was a great season for them, and that includes the people who run the Bristol Mountain ski resort.

Sales and Marketing director Drew Broderick says for the first time Bristol has had skiing for seven months, from November 11, through May 1, even if the mountain wasn’t open for every one of those days in between, because of conditions.

And despite one of the snowier winter seasons in our region in recent years, there were still challenging conditions for area ski hills. Broderick credits the staff at Bristol for all of the days they were open this season.

“Well, it’s very strategic, and that’s why you can’t have a successful season just on snowmaking; grooming plays a vital role in that, so our team of snowmakers and groomers really pulled this together,” she told WXXI News.

And Broderick says Bristol decided it would be fun to open May 1, just for the heck of it;  and yes, she does expect skiers even on a 70-plus degree day.

“From the minute we sent an announcement out, the phones started ringing off the hook. We’ll definitely have season pass-holders here tomorrow, we’ll have people buying tickets; I have a sneaking suspicion, (that) a guy who likes to come up from Pennsylvania, (will) be on our doorstep, which will be nice. We may have a few Canadians come down.”

Bristol is open Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to Noon. You can go to their website, bristolmountain.com/conditions for information about the trails.
