The Rochester Police Department is teaming up with inmates in the Orleans Correctional Facility for an anti-violence initiative.
The inmates from the jail's Civic Duty Initiative Team raised $1,050 to help police take illegal guns off city streets.
"It is truly remarkable that the violence and deaths of so many of our young people in this city has motived the inmates of the Orleans correctional facility to initiative such a proactive effort," says Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard. "Their willingness to take action and assist us in our mission to end the violence is truly monumental."
The Rochester Police Foundation and Full Gospel Tabernacle Church matched the inmates' donation.
"It sends a wonderful message from the inside to the young men and women in our community ... that you can have a change of life," says Rev. Ira White, the church's pastor."
Some inmates recorded a video telling their personal stories, which is posted on Youtube.
The gun buyback and drop off is at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church on Clifford Avenue Saturday, September, 22 between 1 and 5 p.m.
Wegmans is donating $50 gift cards for anyone who drops off a long gun and $100 for a hand gun.
