Reports: WNY Flash moving to North Carolina

Reports are that a local professional women's soccer team is moving.

Two Soccer websites, fourfourtwo and equalizer soccer report that the Western New York Flash will be moving to North Carolina.

The reports say that the Flash, which plays its games at Sahlen's Stadium, will be sold and are expected to play the season later this year in Cary, North Carolina.

The team is owned by Buffalo-based Sahlen's Packing Company.  There's no official confirmation of the reports yet from the National Women's Soccer League or the team owners.

The Flash has played the last six seasons in Rochester and won three championships including last year.

"The Flash will be missed here in Rochester and we are disappointed at City Hall to learn the team has made a business decision to leave," said Communications Director James Smith. "The City of Rochester will continue to work with our local professional sports teams to keep our local sports and entertainment scene vibrant."

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
