Police: Missing children in Greece found safe in Alabama

Town of Greece, NY Police patch

Greece Police say the two young children kidnapped Monday evening have been safely located in Alabama.

Police Chief Drew Forsythe said Wednesday night that 3-year-old Shekeria Cash and her 5-year-old brother Dimitri Cash Jr. were found in the back seat of a car being driven by a woman in Montgomery, Alabama, late Wednesday afternoon.

An Amber Alert had been issued late Monday night when police say someone broke into the foster home the children were living in on English Road. At that time, police say two men in ski masks duct-taped a woman living there and two of her other foster kids, grabbed Shekeria and Dimitri and took off.

Forsythe says police got a lead from a car rented in the Rochester area when it was found by authorities in Alabama. The woman driving it was spotted leaving a residence; she was stopped and the two children were found under blankets in the back seat, by the floorboards.

The children are expected to be returned to their Greece foster home soon. The woman driving the car was taken into custody.

Forsythe said there is still much investigative work to be done. Originally, police were also speaking with the children’s biological father, Dimitri Cash, but at this point there is no word of any additional arrests.

Forsythe credited the multi-agency investigation, which included Greece and State Police, the U.S. Marshal’s office, the FBI and the Monroe County District Attorney’s office, all working together to resolve the case in about 48 hours.

“While this is the best outcome that we could ask for in this investigation, it is far from over. Every person responsible for this abduction will be sought and apprehended. They will be held accountable for what they did," Forsythe said.
