Western New York Flash makes it official: the team is moving to North Carolina

The Western New York Flash has confirmed the reports that first surfaced last week; the local professional’s women’s soccer club is being sold and will be moved to Cary, North Carolina.

A statement from the Flash said in part that,  “Unfortunately, it has become apparent that the Western New York market is not the right fit for the NWSL and the future direction of the league. We know that the North Carolina market will provide what the players deserve and we are excited to see the team continue to compete at the highest level…”

The team is owned by Buffalo-based Sahlen's Packing Company.  It played its home games at the soccer stadium in Rochester, which is where the Rochester Rhinos also play.

The Flash has played the last six seasons in Rochester and won three championships including last year.
