RPD Reverts Back to 1-Person Patrol Cars

Rochester Police officers are back to one person patrol cars.

That word came in a brief email from the department late Tuesday afternoon;  The department had announced on Monday they began assigning two officers to patrol cars, instead of one, as a result of the shooting of police officers in Baton Rouge and Dallas.

Police Chief Michael Ciminelli had said the move to two officers per car was a temporary situation, but there's no immediate word why the staffing reverted to the previous level so quickly.

Mayor Lovely Warren says she was told by police officials they went back to the one person cars because after reviewing intelligence they saw no apparent threat.

The police union sent out a tweet that said, "apparently all of our safety concerns have been resolved in 24 hours...what has changed ?"

The department's tactical unit cars have always had 2 officers per car.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
