Courtney Wagner, the 18 year old whose four-year battle against brain cancer inspired thousands from her hometown of Canandaigua and places far beyond this region, has died. Courtney's family made the news public Monday night.
On her Facebook page, her family posted this message:
“Tonight at 5:30pm, with her family by her side, our sweet Courtney went to heaven. She died as gracefully and as generously as she lived. Courtney waited until the very moment that her brothers, sisters, parents, and grandmother were with her.
Earlier this week, I asked Courtney to send me a sign that she is ok. She already has. Go look at the beautiful moon, and you will see her light shining still.
We miss her already, and we are grateful for the precious gift of Courtney”
Courtney fought brain cancer since 2011. She graduated from Canandaigua Academy in June and was attending Hobart and William Smith Colleges until her condition deteriorated, and in September, her mother revealed that a recent MRI showed the tumors were growing.
Courtney appeared on the Ellen Degeneres Show in March following a community-wide social media campaign #GetCourtneyToEllen.
