In the wake of the overnight shooting in Rochester on Genesee Street, that took three lives and resulted in injuries to four others, the Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Rochester, Dwayne Mahoney, issued this statement:
Last night at the top of the parking lot near the Boys and Girls Club a drive by Shooter killed three people and injured four more, many of the people Were Leaving project step up basketball game.
I want to make it abundantly clear that to our knowledge no one from the crowd or the players had anything to contribute to this heinous act. we have been operating project step up all summer and have never had any issues amongst players or the crowd which was also the case tonight. Most of the crowd had already left and were going home including most all of the players that played in the game. the kids that were attacked at the top of the Sidewalk we're walking home and had lingered For a bit at the top of the parking lot.
We will keep you updated as you will hear many versions Of what happen but we want to make it explicitly clear that neither the players nor any people in the crowd did anything to my knowledge to provoke this, this was simply the act of a madman."
Rochester Police Chief Mike Ciminelli also says the shooting at this point does not appear to be directly related to the basketball game. Police are asking anyone with information to call them.
