A 14-year-old from the Rochester area was killed Friday after falling into the gorge at Letchworth State Park.
New York State Park Police said the teen was hiking with a friend and the friend's father along Trail 1 near the Great Bend Overlook, when shortly before 1 p.m. Friday, the teen stepped off the trail and fell.
Police tell Time Warner Cable News that the teen boy fell about 200 feet, and that there were no barriers or walls off of the trail in the area where he fell. A police helicopter and rescue team were also at the scene.
The teen has now been identified as Matthew Rezsnyak of Penfield. The Penfield School District did release this statement on Saturday:
"The Penfield Central School District is deeply saddened by the loss yesterday of one of our Penfield High School 9th grade students. Counselors will be available to provide support for all students , K-12, from 12-3 pm today, Saturday, Oct. 11th, Sunday, Oct. 12th and Monday, Oct. 13th in the counseling office at Penfield High School. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family at this difficult time."
This is the second person to die this year from falling into the Letchworth gorge. Last February, a North Tonawanda man died after falling in the gorge.
