Seneca Indians Back Off On Casino Plans In Monroe County

www.beverageevents.com

The Seneca Nation of Indians says it is not pursuing a casino in Henrietta or anywhere else in Monroe County.

The Seneca President Barry Snyder sent a letter to Monroe County Legislator Justin Wilcox, saying that due largely to what Snyder calls the “misrepresentations of gaming competitors and misunderstandings” he is clarifying and confirming his position that the Senecas are not pursuing the siting of a casino development project in Henrietta, or Monroe County at this time.

Snyder did write that if an opportunity in the Rochester area came up down the road, it would be approached only within a community that is “supportive and eager to engage in a collaborative process.”

The Seneca Gaming Corporation had announced in March it bought land on Clay Road in Henrietta  as a potential casino site. But the town board passed a measure opposing a casino in Henrietta.

The group “No More Casinos” has been among those who have been vocal about the idea and Thursday night it issued a statement claiming the letter from the Seneca president is “merely a transparent ploy to get its opponents to let down their guard”

The No More Casinos Group says it will continue to look for definitive statements from all levels of government opposing the development of a casino in Monroe County.
