The superintendents of Brighton and Pittsford schools are responding to a racially insensitive chant at a boys' basketball game last week.
According to Time Warner Cable News, a Brighton athlete, who appears to be of Asian Indian descent, was at the free-throw line when some fans are heard on video chanting "We want slurpees."
The reference is a stereotype that many people of Asian Indian descent own and operate 7-Eleven stores.
Brighton superintendent Kevin McGowan says the Brighton player heard the chants, but continued to play.
Pittsford superintendent Mike Pero says the students involved took full responsibility for their behavior and are expected to apologize for their actions.
The two superintendents issued this joint statement:
"We were very disappointed to learn of this incident. We have been working with our colleagues in both districts throughout the weekend to address intolerant and unacceptable fan behavior. That work continues today. The students involved took full responsibility for their behavior, and attempts are being made to right this wrong between the students and to address the long- term learning that can arise from the disappointing behaviors of a few.
