For the first time in 16 years, downtown Rochester has a full-service New York State Department of Motor Vehicles branch.

Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello joined Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren, Congressman Joe Morelle and other officials for the announcement and ribbon cutting at the new office at 200 East Main Street, across from the former Chase Tower.

Bello says the project is a result of a joint effort of the county, city and the state, and helps right an historic wrong by bringing equal DMV services back to downtown, which will benefit everyone.

“Increasing access to DMV services anywhere improves wait times and the quality of service everywhere,” he said.

The downtown DMV will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and it shares space with a Social Security Administration office and the city’s Traffic Violations Agency.

“The co-location with Social Security, with traffic court, it just everything so much easier, and makes so much sense,” Morelle said. He helped secure funding for the project when he was a state assemblyman.

Warren says bringing DMV services back to Rochester is not only a convenience for residents, it will bring additional energy and activity to the downtown core. Plus, city residents will no longer have to travel to Greece, Henrietta, or Irondequoit to visit the DMV.

“The residents of Rochester deserve the same as their suburban counterparts,” she said.

Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello says the new downtown DMV office is long overdue:
