Todd Baxter may run for Monroe County Sheriff

Todd Baxter, who recently left his job as executive director of the Veterans Outreach Center, and has had a long tenure in law enforcement, says he is exploring the possibility of running for Monroe County Sheriff.

Baxter stepped down after three years with the VOC; before that he was Greece Police Chief for four years, and also served more than 20 years in the Rochester Police Department. Baxter also spent just over 22 years in the military.

Baxter is a registered Republican, but says out of respect for the process, he’s not providing any other details right now, such as whether he might run as a Republican or a Democrat.

If he ran as a Republican, it’s possible he would face a primary fight with the longtime incumbent, Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn, who is expected to seek a fifth term.

Baxter says he should have a decision about his candidacy within about two weeks.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
