Senator Charles Schumer is in Rochester Monday to talk about the need to make changes to the Summerville Pier in Irondequoit.
Schumer is reacting to a series of boating accidents at that location in recent years. He will be here to call on the U.S. Coast Guard and Army Corp of Engineers to install lights and other safety measures at Summerville Pier. He notes there have already been two late-night boating accidents this summer, and a number of other similar incidents in the past, including one in 2008 where three people died.
The senator says that the lack of light on pier as well as its low height in relations to Charlotte Pier, which runs parallel to Summerville Pier, makes it a hazard for boaters who may not see the pier at night.
Schumer says installing better lighting is not expensive and could help avoid another boating disaster.
He will hold a news conference Monday afternoon with local boaters and elected officials
