Greece Does Not Support Housing Child Detainees at Former Kodak Warehouse Facility

Michelle Faust

The Town of Greece does not support any plans to warehouse child immigrant detainees at a former Kodak facility. That’s according to an announcement by the town supervisor Monday.

Reports began late last week that the federal government was inquiring about Western New York sites to house children who crossed the border illegally without their parents.

Bill Reilich says the warehouse facility formerly owned by Kodak on 1600 Lexington Avenue does not have the appropriate bathroom or cooking facilities to make the location safe to house people.

“It doesn't meet any of the standards of the International Code Council, the ICC, which dictates the zoning code throughout the State of New York for a safe environment for one to reside in,” Reilich explained to reporters.

In addition, Reilich reports many Greece residents are opposed to the idea.

“I've heard from a number of residents, through emails, all of which, all of the comments I heard were not supportive of this going forward. So, listening to the people and as a result, I am not supportive of this possibility,” said Reilich.

According to Reilich, the developer has assured him they will not proceed without community approval.
