In Republican primary elections Tuesday, Manhattan attorney Wendy Long defeated two others, and will face Democratic U-S Senator Kirsten Gillibrand this fall.
She now faces the daunting task of trying to raise millions of dollars and build statewide name recognition by Election Day in November.
Gillibrand, a three-year incumbent, already has about $10 million in campaign cash.
Former Erie County Executive Chris Collins beat Iraq War veteran David Bellavia in the Republican primary in the 27th district. Collins will take on Kathy Hochul in the general election in November.
There was a Democratic primary for the 23rd district in the Southern Tier: Nate Shinagawa defeated Leslie Burke for the chance to challenge Republican Tom Reed this fall.
