Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday that state-run universities are recalling about 300 study-abroad students and faculty from China, Italy, Japan, Iran and South Korea; places where the numbers of coronavirus cases have been growing.
Some private colleges locally are taking a similar path.
Cuomo said on Wednesday that students from those particular countries who go to SUNY or CUNY schools will begin a 14-day quarantine when they return
Cuomo said they will be flown back to the U.S. on a charter flight and quarantined for 14 days. Some area private colleges are in a similar situation.
Nazareth College says some students have already returned home from Italy, and guidelines from the state department of health ask that students self-quarantine at home for two weeks. Students at Nazareth won’t return to campus until after spring break, which would be around March 16.
St. John Fisher College issued similar guidelines, noting that it has canceled study abroad programs in Italy and it’s also recommending that 14-day home quarantine.
In area public schools, districts have mainly been referring people who go to their websites to check out the CDC websitefor the most up to date information, and say that they have plans in place to work with the Monroe County health department if there’s an outbreak of the novel coronavirus.
