Scholarship Program At MCC Established For Some City Kindergartners

A former top Rochester official is donating a substantial sum of money to help some city school kids go to college one day.

Carlos Carballada says he was inspired by his daughter, Michele Carballada, who teaches kindergarten at School 29.  So he and his wife Virginia will donate $200,000 to MCC, as part of an endowed scholarship fund for city students.

The way the program would work is that students from Michele Carballada's kindergarten glass who earn good grades and graduate from high school will eventually be eligible for a scholarship based on financial need.

Carlos Carballada says this will should help inspire the parents of the students as well.

“To give them and their families incentive to stay in school, do well, graduate from high school and go on to two years of MCC and not have to worry about the funds for that “

Carballada is the former neighborhood and business development commissioner for Rochester. He is also a former state regent.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
