Gas prices continue to fall in New York state.  That’s according to the AAA of Western and Central New York which says that gas in the Rochester area is averaging $2.69 a gallon right now, down two cents from last week. And it’s just under the statewide average of $2.70 a gallon.

AAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Carey says a drop in prices is pretty typical this time of year.

“Gas is always cheaper at this time of year because the refineries have switched over to the winter blend of fuel which is cheaper to produce. At the same time that high summer demand has dwindled; less people are taking road trips right now, so lower demand usually means lower prices,” Carey said.

Carey does note that world events can also have an impact on prices.

“Whenever issues arise in the  Middle East,  the price of oil can be affected. And if the price of oil goes up, the gas prices usually follow. So AAA is keeping a close eye on what’s going on in the Middle East as well as oil prices which will impact the prices we pay for gas.”

Carey says the AAA expects prices will continue to fall barring any global events that might cause oil prices to spike.
