New numbers out from the State Labor Department show a loss of 2,400 private sector jobs in March compared to a year ago. That comes on the heels of a 4,400 job loss last month.

But state labor analyst Tammy Marino thinks the figures are skewed by some changes in the way the job data is gathered.

“While it may be possible that the local job market has slowed somewhat, I think it’s much more likely that the sample, and we use a sampling of area businesses to create our employment estimates, it’s very likely that the sample is undercounting employment,” Marino told WXXI News.

Marino says other measures looked at by the labor department actually indicate the local job market is still healthy and expanding. She says recently, there have been increases in areas including professional and technical jobs, health care and the leisure industry.

The Rochester Metro saw the biggest jobs in private sector jobs in those latest numbers of any metro area in the state.
