Another step forward in the Midtown Rising redevelopment project.
After demolition began on the former Midtown Mall seven years ago, and subsequent asbestos abatement and cleanup, they're ready to start construction on the Tower at Midtown.
A ceremonial plaque was hung at the site Friday.
The Tower is a combination of retail and office space, and 179 modern apartments.
It's the centerpiece of the 59-million dollar Midtown Rising Project, which will create 29 permanent jobs, retain 316 jobs and create 200 construction jobs.
Developer Larry Glazer of Buckingham Properties says with the partnership of the public and private sector, a project like this wouldn't work.
He says the vision for the project goes beyond the tower, with plans to develop a large urban center encompassing the entire 8.6 acre site.
Local leaders say the project will play a vital role in bringing new life to downtown.
It's expected the Tower at Midtown project will be completed in a year.
