Wegmans, which already has 88 stores in several states, is looking to open its first store in North Carolina.

The News&Observer online newspaper says that Wegmans is considering a location in Cary, North Carolina, which is in the Raleigh-Durham area.

Wegmans spokesperson Jo Natale tells WXXI News that the company has signed a letter of intent and is working through lease negotiations with a developer. She says they hope to have a final lease agreement sometime during the first quarter of this year.

Rochester-based Wegmans already has stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland, and Massachusetts.

Before retiring in March 2025, Randy Gorbman was WXXI's director of news and public affairs and managed the day-to-day operations of WXXI News on radio, television, and online.
