John Covach has been named the inaugural director of the University of Rochester's new Institute for Performing Arts.
Covach is a rock historian and professor at the U of R and also the founding director of the university's Institute for Popular Music.
The new Institute for Performing Arts is one of the initiatives identified by U of R President Joel Seligman as being essential to the continued success of students. The institute will cultivate and promote engagement in music, theater and dance.
Covach has authored dozens of articles and edited several books and in 2012 he founded the Institute for Popular Music to encourage the serious study of popular music in higher education.
