Spectrum rolls out new high-speed service

Spectrum is offering faster internet speeds. Spectrum, which is the brand name for the service provided by Charter Communications, is rolling out something called  “Spectrum Internet Gig“ in Rochester.

Priced at $104.99 for new customers, it offers speeds of  a gigabit-per-second which is ten times faster than Spectrum’s basic internet offering.

The service is now available to about 23-million homes in a number of markets. There are other pricing options for existing customers as well as another internet service that is somewhere in the middle between the basic offering and the new one-gig option.

Spectrum is facing some competition on the higher speeds from a local company called Greenlight Networkswhich offers a gigabit-per-second service for 100 dollars a month.

Greenlight, though, is somewhat limited in the geographic area that it covers right now.

Recently, Paychex founder Tom Golisano proposed acquiring Greenlight.  That deal is still pending approval from the NYS Public Service Commission..
