The operators of the Ginna Nuclear Power Plant in Wayne County say that plant was taken off line on Thursday evening to repair some nearby electrical equipment.
That equipment is actually owned by RG&E and it’s located across the road from the Ginna plant. The issue involves the repair of some transformer equipment.
The plant was taken offline to make it easier for RG&E to make the repairs; there is no danger to the public.
There’s no word at this point how long the plant will be off line, but officials with the plant operator, Exelon Generation, say the shutdown will have no impact on electrical service to customers.
A spokeswoman for Exelon says the plant has operated at 95% capacity over the last 10 years, with any shutdowns usually involving planned outages for re-fueling. That has to be done every 18 months or so.
Ginna is one of the oldest nuclear power plants in the country. It began service in 1970.
